Buddy Chicago, signage &#38;amp; messaging, 2022
 project by D. Josh Cook, Oscar Solis, and Layne Thue-Bludworth Buddy Chicago, an artist hub and shop located in the Chicago Cultural Center, provides visibility and opportunities to artists across the Chicagoland area through exhibitions, talks, workshops, performances, readings, and a retail space.&#38;nbsp;This collaboration between Public Media Institute and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) furthers both institutions’ goals of providing visibility and opportunities to artists across the Chicagoland area. 
With all that Buddy is and does, our challenge was to nail down messaging that covers it all without sounding convoluted. We focused on driving visitors to the physical space where they could then explore and learn more about what Buddy is.  From there, the layouts unfolded nicely thanks to the compelling visual language that Buddy has been using since its inception for outdoor and digital signage.

 2024Chicago is home to a rich and growing ecology of puppet artists whose work bridges disciplines and communities of makers. Potential Energy’s sampling of works by local artists is intended to challenge expectations about puppetry and inspire makers from all disciplines. Take the rare chance to look closely at sculptural works usually only seen in motion at a distance. Celebrate material and formal invention, trace networks of collaboration, and discover some of the exciting questions and possibilities that are animating puppet art today.Exhibition graphics, wall text, titles, translations, flyers and a social media post for Potential Energy curated by Grace Needlman and Will Bishop at the Chicago Cultural Center. Our approach was to lean into puppetry, specifically the silhouettes of shadow puppets, for expressive wall text that was simultaneously thoughtful and playful like the artwork in the connecting galleries.

&#38;nbsp;Using a contemporary typeface that was inspired by lines within script typefaces and gestures within the mediums of drawing and printmaking, I developed all graphics for this exhbition. The long, joining line gesture was pulled from the title wall and applied throughout the galleries as an identifier for each distinct section on the gallery wall and labels. &#38;nbsp;
About the show:
The first exhibition ever to focus on the multiple connections between drawing and printmaking, this presentation brings together around 90 works on paper by some of the greatest artists in the Western tradition to uncover the inner workings of their creative process and offer new ways to think about the links between the two mediums.

project by D. Josh Cook, Oscar Solis, and Layne Thue-Bludworth&#38;nbsp;How do we make design labor visible? 

During this performative exhibition at Typeforce 12, we welcome our audience to participate in a series of typographic experiments that surface the various forms of labor that are often obscured or minimized in the design process while speculating on the future of design labor. Through this series of technological mediations, this publication was created with one critical text from each of three sections engaging in the tradition of urgent publishing: feminist perspectives, radical pedagogy, and queer language. 

The programmed typesetter, utilizing basil.js, selects the texts, typesets the copy, and prints out the publication for you. Creative coding programs act as type designer with outputs being executed via a pen plotter.

With four possible texts per section and six different cover options, there are a total of 384 possible versions of this publication. As such, all 200+ produced copies are unique objects.&#38;nbsp;

MdW Fair, wayfinding, program, and schedule, 2022
 project by D. Josh Cook, Oscar Solis, and Layne Thue-Bludworth MdW, an artist-run Assembly that was dormant for 10 years, returned in 2022 with a renewed mission to convene alternative artist platforms in Chicago. Working with the Public Media Institute team and using the established branding for the fair, we designed wayfinding, maps, and programs to help visitors navigate the multi-story venue, Mana Contemporary Chicago, and see all 70+ projects and events. We created vinyl wall graphics for 5 floors of Mana, each artist booth, and the Pavilions of the 2nd floor that visitors could easily read and follow. Our printed catalogs, with a program and schedule, matched the playful visual language of the signage. We aimed to be super clear—with so many artists and a shifting space—and listed the participants by booth number and name, along with a detailed map. Programs and schedules were riso printed in an edition of 1,000.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp;In order to showcase the incredible breadth of Catlett’s work, as well as the large number of objects and bi-lingual didactics, I developed a simple exhibition identity that woked in the least amount of space. The tabbed gesture reflected inspiration from pubications and was used thoughout the galleries and city-wide marketing campaign.
About the show:
Bringing together over 100 works from across Catlett’s awe-inspiring career, this long-overdue retrospective showcases the significant role this revolutionary artist and radical activist played in her time and the influence she still has today. Her powerful work continues to speak directly to all those united in the fight against poverty, racism, and imperialism.

	Strange Realities: The Symbolist Imagination

&#38;nbsp;Pulling from the stong emotions and ideas depicted in the works, I developed the identity for this show by enlarging a small print (by Odeon Redon) and spacing the type over the striking image. This bold, high contrast combination of text and image was then used in the subsequent marketing campaign.
About the show:
This exhibition features works on paper by iconic Symbolist artists such as Norwegian Edvard Munch, as well as lesser-known figures like the Austrian Emilie Mediz-Pelikan, the Belgian Léon Spilliaert, and the French Gustav Adolf Mossa. Drawn from the Art Institute of Chicago’s rich and historic collection of drawings and prints, including the largest collection in America of the French Odilon Redon and Paul Gauguin, this display features over 85 works that capture the beauty and strangeness of a mysterious generation of artists.

 Isola, a typeface similar to  Venus Grotesk, ia a minimal sans-serif typeface which was widely used during the Bauhaus. The title wall design was based off the Bauhaus publications in the 1920s and 30s.&#38;nbsp;
About the show:While this style is often associated with the Bauhaus, an influential German art school of the 1920s and early ‘30s, this exhibition—of nearly 100 works across four decades—explores this modernist aesthetic as it developed through exchanges among a broader set of artists from Germany, Japan, and the United States.
